Rain or treadmill?

Tapering. The last week before the Roma-Ostia half marathon begins. I was lucky because I succeeded in following the scheduled program and now I can say the magic word: tapering.
I decided to enter this half because it is a classic and the most participated in Italy but I must wait in the last gate for the reason that my only result in 2010 is 1h 56' 16": it means that I will begin to run 20 minutes later than the official start.
My goal is 1h49"59" and the dream 1h45'59" (far from my PB of 1h31'58" 20 years ago).
Wednesday was a dark rainy morning and I had to take a decision: a wet workout or the "dreadmill"? No doubts, a run under the rain. The drivers looked at me as a crazy man but I was happy despite the weather and I ran one hour without any problem before going to my office.
This gentleman is the last of the Black Knights, my grandson Leonardo:

Venice. On tuesday and wednesday I will be in Venice for a work meeting about the environment in the ports. I hope to make a touristic run through the city. I will take a lot of pictures!!!

Question: do you prefer the treadmill or the rain?

Have a good week end

  1. Me? Treadmill, definitely. Especially if it is windy too.
Your grandson is adorable! Have a great time in Venice - looking forward to seeing your pictures - and enjoy your taper time!

  2. Rain wins hands down.
Venice is beautiful. I hope you get time for at least one run while you're there. Take lots of photos so we get to see more of this gorgeous city.

  3. I would pick running in the rain any day over the treadmill!

Such a cute little grandson you have! I wonder if he will be a runner one day?

  4. I'll have to vote rain, as long as my feet don't get totally soaked.

Oh love Venice! Need to return one of these years.

    Viva Sir Leo!

  5. Rain, rain, rain! Definitely rain!

I did do a run on the treadmill a few times because of the rain but now that I've run in all kinds of weather, including snow, the only thing that gets me on that damn thing is when the roads will be too icy to run on.

If it rains you're wet after 5 minutes and since you're already wet you might just as well continue.

Have fun in Venice, been there once and we thought it was beautiful.

  6. Since I live in the rainforest, I am used to running in the rain! lol but when it is windy and raining, that is not as much fun. I'd pick rain instead of treadmill.

I would get lost if I tried to go for a run in Venice. Hopefully you know the streets well!

  7. I don't mind the rain if it's warmer out but cold and rain, no way. Also, my half PR is 1:45:55. I'm trying to get that down by 55 seconds. It stinks being so close to your goal. Good luck with the race.

  9. What a beautiful photo of your grandson :) Glad that your training goes well!

I don't mind running in the rain although I know that the treadmill is useful, especially in winter time.

Have a great time in Venice!

  10. Love the picture of your sweet grandson! Can't wait to see some Venice pictures...having friends who live/visit cool places is nice since I don't!

I'm not at all a fan of the treadmill...don't mind a light rain, not crazy about a heavy rain.

  11. I think sometime running in the rain is more fun than running in the sun!

Have a great time in Venice :)

  12. In summer (now), the rain. It's warm, 25C, and the rain is cooling. In winter, 5C, rain again, but I don't like it!

1:49:59 would be similar to my time at the moment. You should go for 1:45:59, passing many people from the last gate!

  13. Enjoy the taper! I'm a treadmill runner and I love it so I would choose running on a treadmill over the rain almost any day. There are times that a run in the rain is marvelous though!

  14. Light rain is fine, otherwise I would go for rescheduling over the treadmill. Your grandson is sooo cute!!

  15. Before I read your post, I will answer the question in the title: RAIN.
And now let me read the entire post. ;)

  16. Oh, wait, you knew the answer and it was the same as mine. You are a smart man. :)
I love Venice but only when it is cold. The only problem I have with the city is that I get hopelessly lost there.
Is that cute knight to be a runner too?terat

  17. If it is less than 6 miles, I will run on the treadmill. If it is longer than six miles, I will do it outside in the rain. I can't stand to be on that thing for more than an hour!

  18. I prefer the rain as long as it's a light rain. Heavy or cold rain and I'm inside!

Enjoy your trip and the taper. Can't wait to see pictures of Venice!!

  19. Oh that picture of you and your grandson is so wonderful! Priceless! It is always raining here in the winter. I prefer the TM if it is cold oregon rain.
And Venice...Italy alone is on my bucket list! My mom's great grandparents are from Italy and I would love to visit with her and learn about her family history.

  20. Rain over treadmill definitely unless it's below zero and windy! Summer rain is really quite pleasantly refreshing! Good luck for your half marathon. Do hope you run in the time you want. Have a great time in Venice. Your grandson is gorgeous. :)

  21. As much as I hate the treadmill. If it is raining, I go indoors. I may be the only one who has never run in the rain. GL on your half!

  22. Your grandson is such a prince!

I will run in the rain unless it's a downpour w/ hail or high winds. Then I will cross-train. Rarely do I use a treadmill anymore. Too many bleak memories of indoor runs from winters past.

  23. Hi Stefano...
I love the picture of Leonardo - I hope he was reading his English ABC book :).

Venice!! Never been but top on my list of places to visit. One day hopefully soon. Enjoy your trip there!

I don't mind a run in warm, gentle rain, I think it actually soothes the soul, but you know me and the treadmil are pretty good friends :).

Nothing beats the taper, time to let the legs recover from all your hard work - enjoy! You're going to do great!!!

  25. Happy Taper Time, thank you for the great photographs. Leonardo is sure getting big!

I never run on a treadmill, the rain is definitely my thing!

    Have a great week!

  26. Oooh... Venice! I hope you have a great time despite having to be there for work. Looking forward to seeing the pics!

    Leonardo is such a cutie!

    Enjoy your taper time!

  27. treadmill over rain - but i hate the treadmill just for the record.

ALso - the boyfriend and I are thinking about planning a trip to Italy - since you know - you live there I thought you could give me some pointers. Can you email me allie0622 at yahoo dot com so I can ask you some questions?

  28. Rain...anyday.

Good luck with the taper. It can be nervewracking.

  29. I don't mind rain, unless it's windy. Then it's treadmill time.

    your grandson is a cutie : )

  30. It depends...is the rain coming straight down, or coming in sideways? Is it really rain, or is it ice pellets? I have no problem running in the rain and getting soaked through as long as I'm not turning into a human icicle at the same time!

    Happy tapering!

  31. Absolutely the Rain Stefano. I love to be outdoors and rain running on the trails is such a hoot. We are in the middle of a very hot Summer right now so not many events or long, crazy runs happening.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I prefer the rain, unless the outer layer is soaked. We get a lot of 40F rain here.

Yes...that was a photo from "Roman Holiday" :) with Audrey Hepburn.
    Your grandson is handsome!

  33. I notice how people look at me when I run in the rain "dumb runner!"

  34. I ran in the rain yesterday, only because I knew I wouldn't be alone. :)
