Roma-Ostia Half Marathon

Prologue. This was my second half after the surgeries (the first one was a 1h56'16" in november 2010) and my goal for the Roma/Ostia was 1h49'49". I followed exactly the scheduled program and on sunday morning I was in Rome, with my new squire Francesco, ready to race. Unfortunately I had to wait in the last corral because that 1h56'16" was not considered sufficient to get a bib to be included among the "real runners"; this meant to begin my run 20 minutes later than the top runners (and 15, 10 and 5 later than the other ones).

Report. Finishing time 1h46'12" at the pace of 5'02"/km (8'06"ml); 5238 of 9486 overall and 363 of 781 a.g. The route was not flat and the pack always crowded. Thanks to this finishing time for all the 2012 I will start my halves in better corrals. As you can see the loot was rich and I also got a k-way. The sunglasses (on the right over the 2 bottles in the picture) are the prize for the business run included into the Roma-Ostia (special category for manager).
The Treadmill. It is a rainy period in this part of Italy. Monday I took a day off to recover after the race, tuesday I went to swim because of the stormy weather, wednesday always storm and thursday heavy rain again, so I prepared my treadmill for the training. Very sad and bored I ran for a long minute on it but immediately I decided to go out and to run under the storm: it was a nice tempo-run 12.2 km long!!!!! I hate the "dreadmill"!!!!! At last today there is the sun so I could run a slow 10 km.

Which was your best "loot" after a race?

  1. Wow, Stefano! You were cruising!! You guys get the best loot. I've never gotten anything near like what you do. I got a hooded sweatshirt at my last race...that was pretty cool, I guess...but it's no bottle of wine! :)

  5. Congrats on a great time. That's some awesome loot.

We get socks, a technical t-shirt and a bag at my next half. I'm pretty excited about the loot and the race.

  6. Wow, congratulations on an incredible time!!! No back of the pack wave is going to stop you from reaching your goals! I hope you had a great time along the way, too!

Glad the rain has stopped so you can get out and off the treadmill.

Best loot I ever got? Um...can't even think of something that stands out - how sad?!? Dallas White Rock Marathon gave out shirts for all registered and shirts for finishing (along with a medal) - that's kinda cool! San Francisco had smoothies at the end of the marathon, I can't think of anything that tasted so good - ever. So I guess those two.

  9. Congratulations on exceeding your goal! Nice loot, too! I think the best thing I ever got was the first year we did the Corrida here in my home town and they gave two bottles of wine for finishing, a bottle of white and a bottle of red. Now they just give one bottle, but that is still nice.

  10. You did well! 5:02/km is good running for that distance. I'd be very happy with a time like that. Well done also on ditching the dreadmill and battling the storms.

Nice loot :) I'm too slow to win much in the way of prizes. I think my most valued is the "buckle" for finishing six 6-foot track marathons.

    Have a relaxing weekend!

  12. Great run Stefano, well done! Sounds like a great race. That is really some super loot. I've had some really good loots over the years but the one I treasure most was a 100 miler where we could pick a stone from the ground at the finish. The RD wrote my name and finish time and date on the stone I picked. That was all we got for 100 miles but very special indeed.

  13. Hi Stefano,
I have missed reading your posts and the first thing that I get to read is this great half marathon race report!! Congrats on your speedy finish! You are running so well! I have a feeling that you are going to be doing wonderful things this racing season! I am still hoping to take some time off of my current HM PR:) I need some of your speedy running mojo....please send it my way!

Take care Stefano and keep up the great work!

  14. Fantastic race (speedy) and a real confidence boost following the surgery. The better corral will make a difference with less runners to dodge. Sounds like the race was on a tough course, and you still nailed the challenge. Great job.
I would rather run in the cold rain (natural) then be on a dreadmill (unnatural)!

  16. Look at you! Look at you!

I never carry home the kind of loot you do, but I will say my last two female-only races netted quite a cache of goodies that only women could truly appreciate.

  17. What a fantastic time Stefano! Congratulations on this great race!

I love the loot. We don't get those here in Holland but registration fees are low too. We do get a medal most of the times.

I can totally understand your hate of the treadmill. I don't like it either although I'm going to fight it again after my half to do some hill training on it but really don't look forward to it.

  19. That is some pretty nice loot! I don't think I've ever had a race with anything close to that. Congrats on your great finishing time. I also love the pictures. I'm with you about the rain- sometimes it's just better to get wet. Hope sunshine comes your way!

  23. way to go on your awesome time! You've worked hard for it.

Best loot....my loot is NOTHING compared to what you get. I've gotten a sample bag of brown rice, never wine like you get, chapstick, tshirt, reusable bags and maybe a GU. I need to run a race in Italy.

  24. Wow!! Stefano you rocked it for sure, congrats on an awesome race! I can not tell you any great loot that I have gotten - compared to the loot you get in Italy, mine is nothing but a T-shirt and a medal. Actually, thet is the only loot I have gotten. A Tshirt and a medal.

  26. Congratulations on a strong race! That's some nice loot, too. I like that T-shirt.

My favorite loot from a race was the sterling silver Tiffany's necklace I received from the Nike Women's Half marathon. It is something that I can wear in real life. :)
