October and Apologies

Apologies. I needed a break because the things go wrong. Please forgive me if I haven’t yet commented your latest posts and for my temporary absence. Shannon I haven’t yet blogged the Liebster Award: I promise I will do it very soon, I beg your pardon.

October 2012. Bad news. I began a swimming program but after the second workout I had to stop it for the strong pain on my lower back all around the fractured vertebra. I needed 2 periods of shots to heal the pain and the deep  inflammation. I did an MRI and the orthopaedic said that I need a surgery to fix my vertebra (plastic or an absorber) but before I have to do one month of phisiotherapy and rehabilitation. Also walking is painful. Only rest and cures now. Running? The doctor, a runner, thinks that I will only be able to run slowly and for short time not before next spring; no more races and no more than 10 km (if I am lucky). The last hope is swimming.

Rome. Yesterday I went to Rome. 2 photos of the Eternal City: the first is Argentina Square, the place where Julius Caesar was killed in 44 b.c. and the second the Vittoriano monument (king Vittorio Emanuele II° memorial). Argentina Square now is also known because of the Cat Shelter.

Swimming. After 3 months of total rest for the vertebra fracture, this morning I went to the swimming pool. Usually I swam 2000 - 2500 meters but for today I had planned to take it easy, resting every 5 lengths. What a big surprise! The things went better and I could swim 1250 meters slowly but without any stop. It was a very good "first time". However not yet time to run, only walks for now. Maybe late october?

September 1990. I spent 2 months in the La Maddalena Naval Base to get the license to steer the Coast Guard Ships. When I arrived there, on the same day, I entered a running race with only 14 participants: not a big event at all. Here are 2 pictures: the post-race and the final rush.

September 2007. The worst september of my life. I broke my femur in many parts. Here are the x-ray. I removed all that iron in november 2008.

In the past this was the right period to increase the mileage for the december marathon but now I can only hope to be ready to walk again with no pain. On monday I will know the reply.
Fall is beautiful here, warm and with many wonderful colors. The nights are amazing but, as you can see in the second photo, the birds come back to the city.

Bad Times

Bad Times. I have taken a break from blogging because I am not in good spirit for all the troubles happened. Please forgive me if I haven't commented your posts. I am off since the 4th of July because of the vertebra L3 fracture. It's hard to heal. On sept. 9th, the day after I ran for the first time on the treadmill (slow 15 minutes), while bowing to take the bread in a supermarket, I felt a terrible pain inside my left hip. It is a very deep strain impossible to treat with the physiotherapy: only strong doses of anti-inflammatories. It happened because my back is too weak after 2 months with the brace. At the moment it is also painful to walk and I cannot say when I will be able to do some activity again. This is the last time that I tell my troubles because it has become a boring topic; the same topic since early June! The next posts will be about everything but not injures and injury updates.

Stormy Weather

Birthday. On 29th we went to celebrate, with all the family, my wife's birthday. It was a beautiful dinner in a restaurant on the sea.

Injury Update. Everything is difficult. Not easy to recover. I tried to work in the gym, followed by a trainer, but the things go wrong because I feel pain in my groin. So, no gym because of that problem and no swimming because all the pools are closed till the end of the month. Tomorrow I will start to run slowly on the "dreadmill" for few minutes. It's a long way again....

Sunflowers and Special Guests

AUGUST: August has almost gone. In the past, on these days, I began the marathon program: very good memories! On this photo, taken in august 2010, you can see the B.K. and Sir Giorgio (first on the left) before a race in Ladispoli:

INJURY UPDATE: The appointment with the orthopedic was hilarious (or tragic??) he didn’t succeed in checking my x-ray by the pc and said: “Never mind, you are strong (???), I know this kind of fracture, you are ok now, you can start to swim and in october to run. By this moment no more brace”.  Crazy situation! Of course I don’t trust him and as soon as possible I will go to another doctor. However I tried to swim but it was a nightmare: pain on my back and very difficult to push with the legs. After 8 slow laps in 30 minutes (yes 30 minutes with a long stop after every lap) I surrendered.

Summer Nights

This is another wasted summer: no beach, no vacations, no swimming, no running, no work. Always at home to heal and short walks by night with my wife (after a couple of right comments I have to specify that in this case it is not wasted time) to enjoy these beautiful summer nights. On wednesday I have another medical check and I hope I will be able to throw away the uncomfortable orthopedic device. I also hope I can start soon the rehabilitation. Who knows?

Injury Update

Before of all I want to thank you for the kind words, comments and e-mails that I received after the incident. You are very good friends.
Since september 2007 I have been fighting against all kind of injures, something very bad (fractures) and other a little less (knee problems) but this one is the worst because is the last and it’s hard to start again a good training for future races. I was ready to race in open water (swimming) and I kept on running regularly but another stupid incident put me off. I broke and crushed my L3 vertebra. The x.rays say that I am healing but the doctor said that I have to wear the “corset” (see the photo) until the end of august. In september I must begin the physiotherapy: massages, light physical training in the gym and in the pool; in october I can swim and do long walks; in november I can try to run again.  I don’t know what will happen but for sure all these incidents have left my body weaker and I think it is hard to come back as I was before this last injury.

The blog is temporary closed for another bad incident. I broken the vertebra L3 while trying to lift the heavy scooter fallen on the ground. Now I must lie on the bed for 30/40 days; in this period perhaps I need a surgery to reduce the fracture. I beg your pardon but at the moment I don't have the strength and the concentration to post and to comment.

1) December 1977: while I was in the Navy Academy I was taken seriously ill with broncho-pneumonia. The doctors thought it was only a stupid flu and I risked my life. The B.K. is the second from left:

2) I love all kind of animals and I am member of many associations for their protection. When I served in the La Maddalena Naval Base I had a special friend, a well refined gentleman: Blackie that you can see here with my wife in 1983:

3) I love the rock music and I go to many concerts with the same friend since we were teen-agers. Here we are with our wives (1999): the scottish tie is a present that I received after a rugby match:

4) I don’t use facebook and twitter. Is this a fault?
5) I have always worked in my city except short periods in the Naval Bases of La Maddalena (18 months), Taranto (6 months), Messina (2 months) and Leghorn (3 months).
6) I want to retire but in Italy it is difficult because the Parliament changes continuously the “rules of the game”. When I am sure that the time has arrived they say: “Sorry we were joking, wait again”. I am very angry with the politicians.
7) In these days my grandson Leonardo is in the hospital for a little surgery. I hope that my little super-hero comes back home soon. Here he is in his room in that hospital:

Time to go to the beach and to take the runs easy because of the heat. When possible my 5 days routine remains the same: run, swim, run, swim, rest but in summer the days at work are hectic so it is difficult to follow this program. The runs are between 10 and 12 km with a weekly longer workout of 14 km (8,7 m). The sessions in the swimming pool are not less than 2000 meters (80 lap lanes). All the mentioned workouts are slower than the usual, in summer I prefer not to overstress my old body. Here is a photo of the beach where I go since 1977:

Next Races. Contrary to the past there are a lot of races in this period. The Black Knight Army made the decision to sign up for the night runs to avoid the hot weather of the summer mornings. On the 1st of July we will run a 10 km in our city: for me it will only be a tempo run because the route is difficult and there are not prizes. On July 6th the main event in Tuscany, 6.3 km (3.9 mg) through the city of Orbetello, with a very good loot to conquer: there, I will try to run a little faster. On July 14th a 10 km in S.Marinella and another tempo run for me. As I have already said I cannot risk more injures, I must learn to manage myself.

Surfing the Web. I have found these 3 photos of the 3 Comuni race (last meters) that I have run last January and, as usual, I am “hiking” a uphill. The n° 1456 is the Sir Giorgio’s humble servant (he is in black uniform too) who left his master, and the running activity, to spend all his time with the new girl-friend. I don’t know if Sir Giorgio will decide to claim the jus primae noctis

Rome - Formula Run Cup 10 K

The Race in Rome. On Sunday the Black Knight (#159) and Sir Giorgio (#158 - see his report too) went to Rome to run the Formula Run Cup 10 K through the business district named  Eur famous to be planned and built under the fascist period.

The organization was perfect, the volunteers friendly and the loot very good (cakes, yogurth, tea, fruit juice, milk and a tech New Balance t-shirt) but the route very difficult: only uphill and downhill (again!!!!) in narrow streets as you can see in the elevation chart below. Also the finish line was at the top of a uphill. As usual I had to forget my competitive spirit not to injure more my left leg.

Stats. 10 km in 49:46 at the pace of 4'59"/km (8'01"/m); 630 of 1127 overall; 590 of 940 men and 60 of 118 age group.

Question: do you prefer a flat  or a hilly race?

May 2012. Stats. Running 130.8 km (81.2 m) in 10 workouts and 1 race. Swimming 22400 meters in 11 workouts.
May 1988. In that month I ran my first half marathon and the finishing time was 1:33:51 (92 of 148 overall). The Black Knight is the first on the left:

Training. I am running painfree but I take care, avoiding long distances and speed works (also tempo-runs). The normal pace of my workouts is 6:00/km (9:40/m) and the distance no more than 16 km (10 m). Swimming is going well even if I am allergic at the chlorine and there is no solution. However I noticed that in one of the two pools the problem is low but it is not allowed to swim for more than 40 minutes while, in the other one, I wouldn't have time limits. I cannot wait for swimming in the sea!!!

Tolfa. Yesterday I had dinner with my family in Tolfa, a nice little town on the hills near my city. We spent very good time together and we ate a wonderful pizza.

Change role in the Black Knight Army: Lady Raina, former "strategist", now is the official "dessert taste-tester".

The Race of Ceri

The Race of Ceri. On Saturday the Black Knight (bib 21) and sir Giorgio (bib 22) went to the ancient amazing village of Ceri to run a 10 km. The scenery was wonderful, a narrow road through the green country full of vineyards and olive trees.

We chose this race because on the website we read: “one lap with a uphill at the finish”; so we thought to run on a flat route with only a uphill. But what a surprise, only uphill and downhill with an impossible final “mountain to hike” where it was almost impossible to run. See the photo (the B.K: is the man in ... black):

Also the loot was ridiculous: 1 apple, 1 bottle of beer and a mini-cake.
As you know I made the decision to race always with no competitive spirit not to injure further my leg and this time, after having seen how tough was the route, I promised myself to be slower than usual.
Stats. Other surprise: the route was 8.9 km long (and not 10 km). I finished in 46:33 (5’14”/km – 8’25”/m); 102 of 153 overall and 12 of 17 age group. Not so bad considering that we met the usual pack with few and good runners but this time the race was really tough and many persons had problems on the uphill because they started too fast.
